The Place

"Our Creator is the same and never changes despite the names given Him by people here and in all parts of the world. Even if we gave Him no name at all, He would still be there, within us, waiting to give us good on this earth."

George Washington Carver

Someone asked me this question and I have yet to hear or see a satisfactory answer. In the Hagada we say: "Baruch Hamakom, Baruch Hu" Hashem is called "Hamakom". Why do we choose this name for Hashem at this juncture of the Hagada? [The question is NOT what is the meaning of this name but why it is used here as opposed to a more common name.]

Tyere Yidden - Please help!

This post discusses why it is used in the hagaddah, although i'm not sure if answers why specifically at that spot in the hagaddah.

it is said right after avadim hayinu, which tells the story of our hardship------- whenever we are faced with a challenge and we might think hashem is far away, chazal use the word hamakom.
for example- 1)when one is sitting shivah, we say hamakom yinachem.
2)right before kol nideri we say 'al das HAMAKOM'
3) we say by acheinu kol beis yisrael......HAMAKKOM yirachem ahleyhem.... indicating we need our lost brothers to come back and we once again envoke this name of hashem (HAMAKOM) to help us during this challenging time.

Rebbe, have a wonderful Pesach!

I have heard that Rav Soloveitchik zatzal, states that as always we go back to the first time where something is mentioned in Tanach.
The name of Hash-m as Hamakom is first mentioned by Yechezkel- baruch Hash-m Mimkomo, at the time when the jews were going into galus.
As a result we see that as Mr. Austein points out this name is used in times of hardship.
Which tells us that even though from our perspective Hash-m is far, he is really close.

I thank you all for your insights and also to the people who emailed me explanations. I am now an expert in "Hamakom"!

Always Wise - I missed you! Good to hear from you again.
